Overview

African Wilds is a slot Microgaming released on 27 August 2025, tagged with Africa and Animals themes. The format field says 3 reels · 1 Line: a single payline across three reels decides each result, the basic frame of a classic slot.

The published values are an RTP of 95.94%, Medium volatility, bets of 0.01 to 300 and the release date. Max win is blank. With a structure this simple, the review concentrates on how these figures look within Microgaming's three-reel family.

Layout and rules

Eight of Microgaming's 142 titles use three reels, and only two of those have a single line: this one and Lucky Shot. The rest are five 3-reel, 5-line games (Horse's Treasures, Tiger's Treasure, and the Nashville 777, Cherry Red and Break da Bank Retro Rollers) plus the 3-reel, 9-line Diamond 777 Multiplier Retro Roller.

The format label tells you there is one payline, but not which combinations pay on it, how much, or whether wilds or multipliers are involved. Having 'Wilds' in the title isn't enough to state a wild rule either. The paytable is in the in-game help screen.

Same frame, different RTP: Lucky Shot

Lucky Shot is a 3-reel, 1-line game released on 27 November 2024. Medium volatility, bets of 0.01 to 300: down to the last character it matches African Wilds. The only published fields where the two differ are the release date and the RTP.

That RTP difference is not small. Lucky Shot publishes 92.16% and African Wilds 95.94%, a gap of 3.78 points. Of the six three-reel titles that publish an RTP, the other five are bunched between 92.00% and 92.16%, leaving African Wilds alone in the 95s.

Identical format, grade and bet range with a different theoretical return is a clear case of why RTP can't be guessed from the other spec fields. Generalisations such as 'three-reelers run low' fall apart on these two titles alone.

Reading the bet range and RTP

A range of 0.01 to 300 stands out in this catalogue. Among the 51 Microgaming titles with a published bet range, the 0.01 minimum is the lowest, shared only with Lucky Shot. The only titles with a maximum above 300 are three Retro Rollers at 500 and Froot Loot at 450.

Measured as a ratio, the top bet is 30,000 times the bottom one. Beyond the width of the range, though, nothing is published on whether rules or payouts change with stake size.

The 95.94% RTP is 0.18 points under the 90-title median of 96.12%, with 13 titles publishing a lower figure. Max win is not published, and a single-payline structure is not taken as evidence that the cap must be small.

Presentation

The cover stands a full-maned lion beside a grinning explorer in a safari hat, binoculars hanging from his neck. Behind them are a jeep, the silhouette of an umbrella-shaped tree and a violet dusk. A map-and-compass ornament at the lower left of the title underlines the expedition idea.

It is storybook character art, and nothing in it hints at the spare 3-reel, 1-line structure underneath. Given that gap between impression and format, looking at the reels in the available demo first is the quickest way to understand how the game is built.

Strengths

  • Three reels and one line make for a simple, clearly labelled structure
  • Its published RTP is 3.78 points above Lucky Shot, which shares the same frame
  • A wide bet range starting at 0.01 is published

Weak points

  • Max win is not published
  • Its 95.94% RTP is below the studio median
  • The paytable and feature set are not on the spec sheet

Verdict

African Wilds' published spec has almost the same shape as Lucky Shot's, and a single RTP line separates them. It shows how much one field can matter in a simple format; for the blank max win, the demo's information screen is the reliable source.
